Seiva is a folk group whose musicians recreate Portuguese traditional music. The musicians perform on traditional Portuguese musical instruments such as the Braguesa viola, the Cavaquinho and the Portuguese bagpipes, as well as a wide range of acoustic percussion instruments including square drums and tambourines.

One of the band’s aims is to keep alive traditional Portuguese music, rhythms that were on the brink of being forgotten. Its music, in fact, draws its inspiration from Portuguese culture, for instance, traditional working songs and songs of faith. The band does not just look to the past, however, but forges new musical paths, using new arrangements and incorporating electronic effects and world beats in its compositions.

The lineup includes Joana Negrão on vocals, Portuguese Bagpipes, adufe (Portuguese square drum), and tambourine; Vasco Ribeiro Casais on Braguesa viola, cavaquinho, and Portuguese bagpipes; and Rita Nóvoa on Portuguese percussion.

Seiva hu grupp folkloristiku li l-mużiċisti tiegħu jġeddu mużika tradizzjonali Portugiża. Dawn idoqqu strumenti mużikali tipiċi tal-pajjiż fosthom il-vjola Braguesa, il-cavaquinho (tip ta’ kitarra Portugiża) u ż-żaqq Portugiża, kif ukoll firxa wiesgħa ta’ strumenti ta’ perkussjoni akustika bħal tnabar kwadri u tamburini.

Wieħed mill-għanijiet tal-grupp hu li jżommu ħajja l-mużika tradizzjonali Portugiża – ritmi li kienu fix-xifer li jintesew. Il-mużika tagħhom fil-fatt hi ispirata mill-kultura Portugiża, fosthom mill-kanzunetti tradizzjonali marbuta max-xogħol jew mal-fidi. Madankollu l-grupp mużikali ma jiqafx biss mal-passat imma joħloq mogħdijiet ta’ mużika ġodda billi juża arranġamenti ġodda waqt li jinkorpora effetti elettroniċi u ritmi dinjiji fil-kompożizzjonijiet tiegħu.

L-artisti huma l-kantanta Joana Negrão li ddoqq ukoll it-tamburin, iż-żaqq Portugiża kif ukoll l-adufe (tanbur kwadru Portugiż); Vasco Ribeiro Casais li jdoqq il-vjola Braguesa, il-cavaquinho u ż-żaqq Portugiża; u Rita Nóvoa fuq perkussjoni Portugiża.
