Skald is a quintet formed recently to breathe life into Maltese literature and culture with its own blend of original music. The name ‘Skald’ derives from the Maltese word ‘splinter’, however, it is also the ancient Scandinavian word for a composer, who recites poems and hymns honouring heroes and their accomplishments.

The musicians are namely Bertu Aquilina (percussion), Gabriel Gauci (violin), Simon Bezzina (bass), Jesmar Bezzina (classic guitar) and Aaron Debattista (acoustic guitar and vocals). All five started their musical journeys at relatively young ages. With different backgrounds, they aim to amalgamate their varied skillsets into new exciting artistic expression.

The percussionist Bertu comes from the eclectic world of ethnic music, while Gabriel invokes his own classical influences with the violin. Simon brings home the raw strength of rock and blues on his bass guitar and Jesmar takes listeners back to their roots with his interpretations of traditional Maltese folk music. Aaron serenades with his vocals and seams together the diverse energies with the sound of his acoustic guitar.

Skald has come to life from the foundations of Malta’s musical heritage and aspires to invigorate it with innovative musical vision. Festivals Malta will be investing in their project, aiming to nurture tradition, support emerging talent while making this tradition attractive to our younger audiences.

Skald hu kwintett li ngħaqad dan l-aħħar biex jagħti l-ħajja lil-letteratura u l-kultura Maltija permezz tal-mużika oriġinali tagħhom. L-isem ‘Skald’ hu l-plural tal-kelma Maltija ‘skalda’ li hi laqxa rqiqa tal-injam li tniggeż. ‘Skald’ hi wkoll kelma antika bil-lingwa Skandinava għal kompożitur li jiddeklama l-poeżiji u l-innijiet biex jonora lill-eroj u l-kisbiet tagħhom.

Il-mużiċisti huma Bertu Aquilina (perkussjoni), Gabriel Gauci (vjolin), Simon Bezzina (baxx), Jesmar Bezzina (kitarra klassika) u Aaron Debattista (kitarra akustika u kant). Il-ħamsa li huma bdew il-karriera mużikali tagħhom meta kienu żgħar fl-età. Permezz tal-isfondi differenti tagħhom, huma għandhom l-għan li jħalltu ħiliethom biex jagħtu espressjoni artistika ġdida u eċitanti.

Bertu l-perkussjonist ġej mid-dinja eklektika ta’ mużika etnika waqt li Gabriel joffri influwenzi klassiċi bil-vjolin. Simon, li jdoqq il-bass guitar, jagħti enerġija mhux irfinuta fir-rock u l-blues waqt li Jesmar, permezz tal-interpretazzjoni tal-mużika tradizzjonali Maltija, jieħu lill-udjenza lura fiż-żmien. Waqt li jkanta, Aaron jgħaqqad l-enerġiji differenti tal-mużiċisti l-oħra, permezz tal-ħoss tal-kitarra akustika tiegħu.

Skald ħa l-ħajja mill-pedamenti tal-wirt mużikali Malti bil-għan li jsaħħuhom b’viżjoni mużikali innovattiva. Festivals Malta qed tinvesti fil-proġett mużikali tal-grupp, bil-għan li tinkoraġixxi t-tradizzjoni u tappoġġa talent ġdid waqt li tagħmel din it-tradizzjoni aktar attraenti għal udjenzi żgħar.
